Developing Community Partners

Thinking question: What kinds of community projects or placements would be appropriate to achieving the goals of your course? Do you already have a community partner in mind?

Community-based learning balances the learning goals of the course with the community organization’s goals. Elements of effective partnership include:

  • Shared goals

  • Mutual benefits

  • Regular communication

  • Evaluation processes

Listening and Understanding

One of the core aspects of community-based learning is developing reciprocal learning partnerships with organizations outside of Georgia Tech. This requires designing projects that are defined in collaboration with community partners in ways that encourage student learning and build capacity.

Connecting

There are several resources to help identify and connect with community partners. Search for possible community partners through GT’s GivePulse platform, or in consultation with the CBL team.   Start the conversation by reaching out to possible community partners, sharing a description of your course, and outlining what you hope students will learn through the community-based learning assignment. A follow-up conversation will assist in identifying mutually beneficial outcomes, expectations, and timelines.

Engaging

Monitoring the partnership throughout the semester can be accomplished through continuous communication and feedback.

Sustaining

Once the semester is over, instructors and community partners are encouraged to review shared goals, and identify plans for future semesters.
